Sunday, Nov. 8th 9a.m. to 4 p.m.
The 21st century has opened up opportunities for photographers working in all formats, traditional film or digital, to make platinum prints. Students should bring to the workshop either 4x5 or larger negatives (up to 8x10) or a CD of high quality scans. We will use the scans to make digitally enlarged negatives for platinum printing if needed. However, the emphasis of this workshop is on making the platinum print so we will be using pre-determined curves for the Epson 3800 printer and not individualizing curves for your printers at home.
We will work with the NA2 platinum/palladium printing process. Topics to be covered include: paper choices, image color, contrast controls, basic hand coating methods, use of step wedges and sensitometry and masking techniques. By attending this workshop beginner platinum printers will be knowledgeable to work independently making platinum prints in your own darkroom. The more experienced platinum printer can use this workshop to build on their skill set and problem-solve printing issues.
The workshop begins Friday night from 6 – 9 p.m. Each student should bring two photographs to share as an introduction with the group. We will make a couple of digital negatives for those who need them so that we can begin printing first thing in the morning. I will demonstrate my approach to working in the digital darkroom by using the PixelGenius plug in with Photoshop. (Information about the plugin can be found here http://www.pixelgenius.com/photokit/index.html). This is the program I use to prepare work for the web, for book publication and to make digital negatives. Friday night I will demonstrate this program and show how I make digital negatives but please note that this class is not a course on the digital negative making process. Students will be able to make digital negatives to print during the workshop throughout the weekend as needed. However, please note that refining digital negatives is not the purpose of this class.
The workshop continues Saturday (9 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and Sunday (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Lunches are not included but we will order in or go out as a group.
I will supply two types of paper and additional developers beyond what are provided in the B&S kits, and some coating rods and brushes. If you are serious about working with alternative processes I encourage yopu to purchase your own glass coating rod and brush.
Student Supply List REQUIRED
- Bostick and Sullivan NA2 Platinum and Palladium Combination Kit (35 ml). This kit will allow you to make approximately 25 – 35 8x10 prints. $198.95 One kit can be shared between two people if needed.
- Negatives – 4x5 to 8x10, that print on a Grade 1-2 photographic paper should work well for platinum printing. OR Students can also bring a CD of high quality digital scans for output as enlarged digital negatives.
- 2 representative prints of your work to share with the group.
Student Extra Supply list
- Puddle Pusher Coating Rod from Bostick and Sullivan (4x7 & 5x7/$18; 8x10/$22)

With guidance and two full days of making prints, this workshop is guaranteed to be an excellent opportunity for the photographically curious.
