Pinholes, Portraits, and Cyanotypes
May 21 – 26, 2017 Floyd, VA Instructors: Tillman Crane and Russ Young Class Size: 10 Tuition: $1725 Register
This will be a very unusual workshop. We will be headquartered in scenic and friendly Floyd, Virginia, home of American roots music, 200-year old farms and forty miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Russ will contribute his expertise in pinhole photography and crafting cyanotype prints. You will be able to work with some of Russ’ 100+ years old cameras and lenses or use your own equipment to make portraits (up to 8x10 negatives) in the “old school“ style in his natural light studio. I will be leading trips to photograph in the landscape along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Later in the week we will generate digital negatives from the images created earlier in the week to make cyanotype prints. Cyanotypes are a simple, beautiful, inexpensive and permanent process for making prints with delicate blue tones. Many of us have created cyanotypes during our photography career but working with Russ will give us new insights to the beautiful subtleties the process can possess. We will look at historic examples in many genres including portrait, still life, pinhole and landscape. Although Peter Henry Emerson (1889) said, “… no one but a vandal would print a landscape in red, or in cyanotype” we are going to have an exciting hands-on week working with pinhole cameras, creating portraits and landscapes and printing in cyanotype.
In addition to the studio and locations along the Blue Ridge Parkway we will be photographing in the Marby Mill, historic rock churches, Floyd County Historical Society Museum and the Friday night music and street dance.
Transportation, Lodging: Participants are responsible for lodging, meals and transportation. The workshop begins on Sunday, May 21st at 6 p.m. and ends with dinner on Friday, May 26th.
