November 1, 2009 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

It’s that time of year for my “shameless commerce edition” of the newsletter. Many changes are being for the website and we hope to have them all completed this winter. In the meantime I wanted to share with you some of the highlights:

My fourth book of images focuses on the Jordan River in Utah, one of the few north flowing rivers in the United States. Historically a wide, meandering river filling the valley floor and supporting a rich, diverse community of wildlife, today’s river is a straightened and channeled waterway of approximately fifty miles. Running from Utah Lake through three counties and fifteen communities before emptying into the Great Salt Lake basin, the Jordan is a testament to the resilience of an ecosystem as well as the power to effect positive change when a cadre of individual communities work together towards a common goal. The creation of the Jordan River Parkway in 2002, a continuous multi-use trail along the length of the river, provides recreation for the valley residents as well as protects the river and its environs from further degradation. The intent of these images was to show the beauty and diversity of this “urban wilderness”. The hope is that they will serve as a reminder to keep inviolate the well being of our natural world.

The 55 images were printed in quadtone on the press at Meridian Printing of Rhode Island. Just published by Sterling & Hurst Editions for a November 2009 release, it was designed by Harrah Lord of Yellow House Studio, both of Maine. A limited run of five hundred copies of A Walk Along The Jordan has been printed and as with Odin Stone and Touchstones, each copy is individually signed and numbered. All photographs were made with either an 8 x 10 format view camera (often utilizing a 6 x 10 back) as well as an 8 x 10 pinhole camera. The book is available for purchase at www.tillmancrane.com or by contacting tillman@tillmancrane.com or calling 207.230.0199.

These images of the Orkney Islands compare and contrast the archipelago’s modern communities as they exist, superimposed on the cultural history and architecture of over 5000 years. A combination of physical beauty, history and a touch of mystery are present throughout this collection of 48 images. Less than half of this limited run of five hundred, signed and numbered, copies remain. Order yours today before they are no longer available!

As always if you do not see a workshop that meets your needs, please contact me and we can design a private tutorial that does.

I will be on the road November 2 – 14 photographing and teaching a Platinum Printing Workshop at Daytona State College. During this time I will be available by email (tillman@tillmancrane.com) and look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Tillman
