Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for my Collectors Print Specials! I appreciate your support of my work, especially through these challenging economic times.

Featuring the 5 x 7 format as a regular, discounted offering has not only made it possible to keep the price down for you as a collector ($225.00, including shipping) but has given me the opportunity to “rediscover” negatives I had stored away for later book projects. Donna and I were just talking this past week about all the new work I made this past year without the distraction and time-consuming tasks of a book project. I have been able to put my energy into photographing, making new prints and trying new methods both in and out of the darkroom. At first not working on a book felt limiting and disappointing and yet the time has resulted in a very creative and changed-filled year.  I look forward to sharing some of these images with you down the road.

The Collectors Print Special (VI) for May 2011 is a vertical 5 x 7 platinum print taken from the island of Sanday, one of Orkney’s largest northern outer islands. The island is nearly 16 miles long and famous for its stunning beaches of glistening white shell-sand and breathtaking views. Boasting a full time residency of around 550, the major industries are farming and shellfish fishing. I went to the island with the intention of photographing and exploring the two small towns (Kettletoft and Lady), the Neolithic ruins and the sandy beaches. I spent much of the day on the beaches of Otterswick Bay, using the pinhole camera to photograph animal bones on the dunes. When I got back to the ferry terminal for my evening boat, the sun was beginning to set. I spied this old wind vane off to the side and with only a few sheets of film and a soon-to-arrive ferry I set to work to capture this image. I was able to make this shot because the “east” arm of the vane had rusted away. This gave me a clear shot looking out over the “west” arrow into the setting sun. The resultant image, Wind Vane, Sanday, Orkney, Scotland (2007), ended up being the image that best described this island for me when I returned home.

The Collectors Print Special for February 2011 is a horizontal 5 x 7 platinum print taken in St. Magnus Cathedral on Mainland Orkney. South Transept Rose Window, St. Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland was shot in 2010 during the Orkney Workshop. Carved from sandstone, this window was not originally part of the cathedral, which was built over five periods between 1137 and 1501AD. Romanesque in style, both the stained glass (over the west door) and the plain glass (south transept) Rose windows were added when the cathedral underwent a renovation during the late 20th century. In 2004 a complete rebuild of the south transept window was completed by a team of stone masons, using locally quarried stone, and reglazed. The strong afternoon came in at an angle and cast these great shadows across the upper walls of the room. We were granted access to the upper gallery from where I made this shot. To give some idea of scale, the archway in the corridor is about seven feet high. Although I made a number of images with my soft focus lenses, I really like the feel of this image made with my 90-mm lens on my 5 x 7 camera. I hope you do too.
