Lady Leng Memorial Chapel

The Collectors Print Special (X) for May 2012 is an image made during my first visit to Scotland in 2002. I discovered the Lady Leng Memorial Chapel, Fife, Scotland quite by accident and spent an afternoon enjoying Fife’s “hidden gem”. Constructed as a memorial chapel for the Leng family in 1895 – 7, it was designed in the French Gothic style and is said to bear a resemblance to La Saint Chappelle in Paris. The chapel is sited on a hill near the center of the Vicarsford Cemetery and though tiny in size compared to its inspiration it can be seen from miles around.

This second image in the 2012 in the Collectors Print Special series is available as a 5 x 7 inch platinum print in a limited edition of 25. Each image will be signed and numbered. When #25/25 is sold, the edition at this print size is closed. This month’s special image is available for $225.00 (price includes shipping) only during the month of May. The Collectors Print Special (IX) for February 2012 is a 5 x7 vertical platinum print from Montana. Barber Chair, Saloon, Bannack State Park, MT was shot in 2011 during an exploratory trip for the new Ghost Towns of Montana workshop. Gold was discovered in Bannack, Montana’s first territorial capital, and approximately 3000 people called it home by 1863. It is an intact, high plains western town containing nineteen buildings, including a saloon, school, Masonic Hall, two hotels, jail and a variety of other businesses and houses. In the saloon, the incongruity of the barber chair on one side of the narrow room and the long bar down the other side gave pause for thought as I photographed the changing shadows on its surface. The image was made with a Heliar 240 mm lens on my 5 x 7 Canum camera.

Cathedral Woods, Monhegan, Maine, 2009

The final Collectors Print Special (VIII) for 2011 is an image from Maine. Cathedral Woods, Monhegan, ME was shot in 2009. I spent a September weekend on Monhegan island, exploring and photographing while contemplating the area for a workshop location. This small, rocky island (less than a square mile in area) is accessible only by boat. For over 100 years generations of artists have sought out the quiet isolation and wild beauty of Monhegan to do their work. With approximately 12 miles of trails taking you through wooded areas, over rocky ledges, up high cliffs and down to the rocky shore it is easy to find creative stimulation. I made this image on a gray, misty morning with the Kodak 305 soft focus portrait lens on my 5 x 7 camera. The day and resulting image remind me of being in the woods in Scotland.

I hope the summer is going well for you. We are enjoying a few days of perfect Maine weather and no matter what came before and what comes next, these will be the days we will remember come winter!

Motor, Lock 28B, Newark, NY

The Collectors Print Special (VII) for August 2011 is an image from the Erie Canal in upstate New York. Motor, Lock 28B, Newark, NY was shot in 2010 on the “new” canal, renamed the “New York State Canal System” in 1992. One of only two locks on the canal with the original electric motors from the 1920’s, this lock has a rise of 12 feet.  There are two motors at each lock where these old engines control the flow of water in and out of the lock and the opening and closing of the lock gates. I placed my 5 x 7 pinhole camera on the wall surrounding the motor because I wanted a fully focused, close-up view of the inside of the engine. The exposure was an hour and a half long and fortunately no boats came through during that time to set the engine in motion. The lockmaster was welcoming and friendly and I was able to leave this image “cooking” while I photographed outside the lock houses.
