January 2010 Newsletter

Happy New Year! I would like to thank all of you who supported Tillman Crane Photography over this past year. Whether you bought books or prints, took a workshop or emailed me your thoughts after reading something on the website, I appreciate your continued interest in my work. As an artist I am driven to make these photographs but it is your continued faith in me that makes it possible for me to support my family through my passion. I am truly grateful to each of you!

I am excited to report two big changes coming to Tillman Crane Photography in 2010. In May our home gallery & studio opens to the publicwith regular hours! After much deliberation we recognized that the expense and wear and tear of maintaining an offsite gallery was not (yet) in our best interest. Our first floor has been used as a gallery since we moved here in 2001 but with a few small renovations and a fresh coat of paint the space is really shaping up. If you are ever in Camden give a call (207-230-0199) to make sure we are here and come on by. We’d love to see you!

The second big change is a complete redesign of our website. The work is scheduled forcompletion in April. In this redesign process we have looked closely at the regular writing features and other sections of the website. The plan for 2010 is to continue to send out a monthly email to those who have signed up. The Newsletter and Musings will rotate quarterly along with two new features – Back Stories andSpecial Print offers. For clarification, here are the descriptions for each of these:

The Newsletter will be the “shameless commerce and self-promotion division” of Tillman Crane Photography. Here we will post notices about exhibits, write about upcoming workshops and lectures and highlight book offers.

The Musings section will become the repository for my writings about photography. I will continue to write about the process of creativity, working as a photographer and ways to stay in the creative and working zone (similar to the “Newsletters” of the past twelve months).

The Back Stories (the old “Musings” section) is where you will now find the stories behind the images. I will reorganize the writings on the images from Touchstones, Odin Stone and A Walk Along The Jordan into this separate section on the website. If you are interested about the “why” and “where” of different images this is the place to go to learn about the thoughts and experience, at least to the best of my own recollection. I still have images in Odin Stone to write commentary on before beginning on the Jordan River book so bear with me.

The newest feature to the website this year will be the Special Print offers. These will occur three times this year and only be available for the month they are announced. These will beplatinum/palladium prints made from 5 x 7 negatives that have not appeared in any publication to date. They will be made available un-matted at a very affordable price (still working on the concept so can’t give you complete details yet). The images chosen for these specials will only be available at this size through the Special Print offers. I will print as many as are ordered and then that negative will be “retired” from being printed at this size again. Some may be used in future books but they will not be available as 5 x 7 photographs ever again. This will be a great opportunity for you to collect my work at very reasonable prices.

Meanwhile, shortly after you receive this January Newsletter the full 2010 Workshop descriptions will be available on the present website. We are be mailing out Workshop Brochures the beginning of January for those of you we have current addresses for. If you do not receive a copy and would like one, please email tillman@tillmancrane.com with your mailing information and we will gladly send one out to you.

Copies of Tillman Crane/STRUCTURE, Odin Stone and A Walk Along The Jordan are available for sale through the website or by calling 207-230-0199. Special pricing is being extended until February 1, 2010 so if interested and you still have some holiday funds burning a hole in your pockets, this is a good time to purchase one of these books!

I look forward to seeing some of you this year in workshops or visiting my gallery. If you have any questions I can (almost) always be reached at tillman@tillmancrane.com .

Wishing you all the best in 2010!
