Tillman Crane/STRUCTURE
Tillman Crane's first book, Tillman Crane/STRUCTURE was published in March, 2001 in a run of 2000 books with a special, limited edition run of 100 books. Each limited edition book comes boxed in a custom slipcase and is accompanied by an overmatted platinum print of the image Brooms.
"This book represents over twenty years of personal images. The structures photographed in this collection include, among others, turn-of-the-century civic architecture, 19th century industrial spaces, and small corners in the landscape. The Library of Congress has designated this book as 'architectural photography' but it is much more diverse than that. When photographing, I approach these spaces with an eye towards the sentient presence left by the people who lived and worked in them. I want to show how the use of light and structure contribute to an aesthetic that we as humans, knowingly or unknowingly, bring to the buildings we inhabit. I combine in my photographs the practicality of the structure (large windows providing light in 19th century buildings) and the textures of light created by these necessities."
"In my work with large format cameras (especially the 8 X 10 and 12 X 20) I see my choice of equipment contributing to my choice of image, much as the images I am drawn to require the use of such tools. For me, the process is as important as the emotional effect of the final image."
Tillman Crane/STRUCTURE was printed in Italy and contains 71 images. Essays, excerpts from which can be reached through the following links, include an Introduction by Paul Caponigro, Foreword by Stephen Perloff, and Afterward by Jack Perkins.
